Must Attend LA Events: Street Food Cinema
Considering the outdoor event, which shows popular movies on a jumbo screen, has graced parks around the Greater Los Angeles area since 2012, I’m almost embarrassed to admit that this was my first time attending one of their screenings. It definitely won’t be my last.
My friends and I arrived around 6:30pm and found traffic and parking to be far easier than we anticipated. Parking was $15 and was only a hop, skip and a jump away from the event area.
Reminiscent of the old drive-in movie theaters, Street Food Cinema makes the moviegoing experience an event. Patrons were allowed to enter the park as early as 5:30pm and stake out their spot on the lawn. I highly recommend bringing a blanket to sit on and a light jacket to keep you warm. You might also consider bringing a lawn chair. If you don’t have one, not to worry – you can rent one onsite for $8. While you’re allowed to bring your own food and drinks, one thing that makes this event so fun is the large selection of food trucks at your disposal.
The film itself didn’t start until 8:30pm, but that doesn’t mean that’s when the fun began. We were greeted with Prince’s tunes being spun on the 1s and 2s by a popular local DJ. Soon, the area around the DJ’s booth became an impromptu dance floor, yielding all types of dances, from the new running man to the electric slide and even a Soul Train-esque circle.
As if seeing a Prince film wasn’t enough, Street Food Cinema really outdid themselves by not only bringing Carmen Electra to introduce the film and share her experience working with Prince (did you know he gave her the name Carmen Electra?) but executing a masterful firework display during the song Purple Rain towards the end of the movie. It was simply beautiful.
If you’re looking for something fun to get into this summer, I highly recommend you check this event out. You can view their upcoming film schedule here.
