1. Metamorphosis Kids Fashion Show at Dexter Park
When: Saturday, August 22, 2–4 p.m.
Where: Dexter Park, Kagel Canyon
Admission: Free
This is such a sweet community event, and a wonderful reminder of the creativity happening in Valley neighborhoods. The Dexter Park Sewing Club will present “Metamorphosis,” a kids fashion show featuring designs created by young sewists ages 6–11.
The children have transformed upcycled and leftover materials, including old curtains and fabric remnants, into skirts, tops, pants, and dresses. The afternoon will also include live music, a DJ set, breakdancing by the Concrete All Stars, and young participants serving as designers, models, and MCs.
Bring the family, cheer on the young creators, and consider bringing clean fabric scraps or usable old curtains if you’d like to support future sewing projects.

2. Discovery Cube LA’s 2nd Annual Health Fair
When: Saturday and Sunday, August 22–23, 11 a.m.–2 p.m.
Where: Discovery Cube Los Angeles, 11800 Foothill Blvd., Sylmar
Admission: Included with general admission or membership
The Discovery Cube’s Health Fair is a great choice for families who want their weekend outing to be both fun and useful. The fair brings together health and community partners offering information about healthy eating, exercise, dental care, mental wellness, and more.
Expect hands-on activities, tabletop experiences, workshops, stage shows, and family-friendly resources. Saturday’s lineup includes activities from organizations such as Vida Mobile Clinic, West Coast Dental, Planet Fitness, PBS SoCal, East Valley YMCA, and others. Sunday continues with additional health and wellness partners.

3. Discovery Cube LA 5K & 1K Family Fun Run
When: Sunday, August 23
Where: Discovery Cube Los Angeles, Sylmar
Registration: Required in advance
Ready to get moving? The Discovery Cube’s annual 5K and 1K Family Fun Run welcomes runners and walkers of all ages. The 5K check-in begins at 6 a.m., with the race at 7 a.m. The 1K Family Fun Run check-in begins at 8 a.m., with the fun run at 9 a.m.
Registration includes race entry, a limited-edition event T-shirt, water, complimentary parking, and all-day admission to Discovery Cube LA. The official event page notes that the registration deadline is August 21, so this is one to sign up for right away. Walk-ups and unpaid participants are not permitted on the course.

4. Beth Sussman Live in Concert
When: Saturday, August 22, 1–2 p.m.
Where: Platt Library, Woodland Hills
Admission: Free
For a quieter and more elegant afternoon, head to Woodland Hills for a live performance by internationally renowned classical pianist Beth Sussman.
A Juilliard graduate, Sussman has performed at venues including Lincoln Center and the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Her Platt Library program will feature miniatures by Chopin, Grieg, and Debussy, along with Rodgers & Hart favorites such as “Manhattan” and “Isn’t It Romantic?”
The concert will be performed on a new piano funded by the Friends of the Platt Library. It’s a lovely opportunity to enjoy live music close to home.

5. Explore the Valley Relics Museum
When: Saturday and Sunday, August 22–23, 10 a.m.–3 p.m.
Where: 7900 Balboa Blvd., Lake Balboa, Hangar C3 & C4
Admission: $15; children 10 and under are free
If you love vintage signs, classic roadside memorabilia, and the stories that shaped Southern California, set aside time for the Valley Relics Museum. Located in the Lake Balboa/Van Nuys area, this unique collection celebrates the Valley’s past through neon, historic signs, photographs, restaurant memorabilia, and other local treasures.
It’s an especially fun stop for longtime residents, curious newcomers, and anyone who enjoys discovering the character behind San Fernando Valley real estate and its established communities.
